Privacy
No account, no telemetry, no analytics, no crash upload, no update check: nothing goes to the internet. On your own network it does only what you ask of it: plays from shares you add, and takes files you send to it from a phone. Your settings, watch history and logs stay on the headset.
The full statement
What FrameCinema collects: nothing. It does not collect, send or sell personal data, usage data or device data, to us or to anyone else.
What it keeps, on your headset only:
- Settings, in
~/.config/frame-vr-player/settings.conf. - The Library: per-file resume positions, watched marks, per-file settings,
playlists and thumbnails, in
~/.local/share/frame-vr-player/library/. - Logs of its last 30 runs, in
~/.local/share/frame-vr-player/logs/, to help you report a problem. They include file names you played. A crash writes its trace there too; nothing is uploaded. - A font cache, compiled shaders, the shape of your controllers as SteamVR
describes them, and a copy of a backdrop photo you chose from a share, in
~/.cache/frame-vr-player/. - The gaze calibration, if you ran it: six numbers in
settings.conf, not where you looked. - The network shares you add, in
~/.config/frame-vr-player/shares.conf(readable only by you): each share's address, user name and an NT hash of its password. The hash is not the password, but it signs in to that share the way the password does.
Delete any of these folders to remove that data. Uninstalling through Steam removes the app but leaves these folders, so your Library survives a reinstall.
Network: FrameCinema never connects to the internet. On your local network it connects only where you ask it to:
- Network shares you add (SMB): it signs in to that computer or NAS and reads the files you browse and play.
- Looking for shares: NetBIOS name queries to the devices on your local network (a /24 or smaller), and an mDNS or NetBIOS lookup of a share's name.
- Receive files: while that screen is open, an upload page on port 8090 to 8099
that answers only private addresses and only with the code shown, and the name
cframe.localannounced on your network (mDNS) for it.
Eye tracking: FrameCinema can use the Steam Frame's eye tracking to point at
its own menu (Settings > Controls > Eye gaze). The gaze is read from the headset's
own runtime only while Eye gaze is on with the eyes as its source, and only to move
the pointer. It is never stored, never written to the log as a direction or a
position, and never sent anywhere. A fifteen-second calibration saves six numbers
that describe how your eyes sit against the menu, in settings.conf on the
headset; Reset under Gaze calibration clears them. Turn Eye gaze off, or choose the
head as its source, and your eyes are not read at all.
Steam itself (downloads, updates, playtime) works as it does for every app, under Valve's privacy policy; FrameCinema adds nothing to it and uses no Steam online features.
Sharing a log: if you want help with a problem, you can copy a log from the folder above and send it yourself. Nothing is ever sent for you.
